Pizza On The Grill

Pizza on the grill what is this all about? This suddenly got me interested as I don't know about you but our family just love pizza! If the teenagers of the family had their say they would eat pizza every day of the week without fail. But you see they are a fickle lot and are not attracted to the bought or pre frozen variety it has to be Mom's made from scratch.

This all started one rainy Saturday when the kids were much smaller and I would be in the kitchen and they were asking "what can we bake?" As I had already proofed the pizza dough this was great timing, it was only a matter of asking each child what asking their favorite topping and I had them making their own pizza.

It was then that I noticed the grilled pizza stone this was a bonus so now I could get the kids making their favorite toppings and Dad could easily:

  • Pre heat the gas bbq grill on low for 5 mins with the grilled pizza stone on top of the grill
  • Then turn it up to medium another 5 mins as this allows the grill to heat through
  • Finally the heat will go up to high for an additional 5 minutes you would then test the stone by dropping a little water on top of it and if it is ready the water will evaporate immediately you are then ready to cook

Pizza Dough Serves 6 - double this hungry teenagers!
7 grams dry yeast sachet
1 tsp sugar
pinch of salt
2 cups plain flour

Method:
3/4 cup of warm water (not hot) sprinkle the dry yeast, sugar and salt into a small bowl whisk with a fork and then leave cover with plastic wrap and put to one side in a warm corner of the kitchen.

Sift flour into a large bowl make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and oil. Mix this together gathering in all the dry ingredients into a soft dough. On a lightly floured board knead the mixture until elastic. Place the ball of dough back in the bowl cover with plastic and give another 20-25 minutes (depending on room temp) until double in size.

With your fist punch in the center of the dough gather the dough up and gently roll out to the pizza shape on a lightly floured board.

Be creative add your tomato base top with what your favorite toppings cook on grilled pizza stone for 20 minutes. This will be the best pizza you have ever had..that's what the boys tell me anyway!

Cleaning A Grill

Cleaning a grill should be done after each use as there will be times that there will be remains from meat and vegetables along with soot and other matter such as marinades remnant still on the grill. For humans especially there is a danger of becoming ill after eating contaminated food and that would of really made people talk after the bbq for all the wrong reasons!

Also the grill could attract vermon and other nasties who also want to nibble on the remains of your gas bbq grill. The other important reason is to maintain the life of your grill so it will serve you for many years.

If your grill has been used recently and has not been cleaned you need to:

Remove the grill and place in hot soapy water if the remains are older you may need to give a good soak to loosen debris. Soak for about 20-30 mins.

Invest in a flexible wire brush with a scrapper at one end. This will allow you to use very little elbow grease to remove the build up on the bbq

Look at giving inside the hood and external features a wash also using hot soapy water. The hotter the better as there would be lots of splash back while cooking.

Remove old sand or volcanic rocks and replace with new.

Before storing the grill at the end of the season ensure that you wash the cover of the unit.

Further tips are on the video and when applied this will cut down the maintenance of your bbq. The total washing of the grill should be done at the start and conclusion of bbq season. This will keep critters away and uninterested in your barbeque.
